A huge variety of folklore is associated with witches balls, and one popular belief was that their reflective properties and bright colours mesmerised evil spirits, who would then touch the ball and be absorbed and trapped within it. Another piece of folklore has fishermens wives hanging the glass balls in the window to keep their husbands safe at sea.
