Witches ball

£29.00

Witch balls were hung in cottage windows in 17th- and 18th-century England to ward off evil spirits, witches, or evil spells.

A huge variety of folklore is associated with witches balls, and one popular  belief was that their reflective properties and bright colours mesmerised evil spirits, who would then touch the ball and be absorbed and trapped within it. Another piece of folklore has fishermens wives hanging the glass balls in the window to keep their husbands safe at sea.  Maybe the fishermen connecting their use for keep nets afloat to the lore that witches float?
